Two factors relate to the growth of the outbreak. Delays in the confirmation of test results, and the delay of contact tracing. The contact tracing system is not keeping up with the large number of daily cases. Thus, the city needs more intensive care beds. There is also an urgent need to increase staff and facilities for Covid-19 testing, so that everyone entering Hong Kong can be tested, especially those who are not quarantined.

There is an unusual large spike occurring after 21 consecutive days without local infections. I discuss the current risk factors and suggest certain public health interventions to control this current outbreak.

]]><![CDATA[Giving a Talk on International Forum on Data Science Approaches to the COVID-19 Pandemic]]>Mon, 01 Jun 2020 15:11:14 GMThttps://www.yuanmodellinggroup.com/news/giving-a-talk-on-international-forum-on-data-science-approaches-to-the-covid-19-pandemicDuring the forum, I shared my modelling results on how to prevent resurgence of COVID-19 after the relaxation of measures. Understanding how quarantine measures in Hong Kong were effective in limiting community spread can provide us with valuable insights into how to suppress an outbreak. However, challenges exist in evaluating the effects of quarantine on COVID-19 transmission dynamics in Hong Kong due to the fact that the effects of border control have to be also taken into account. I showed how the effects of intervention measures were estimated using a meta-population model.
